Northern Lights

Photo Information
Northern Lights 11. September 2015 above the Trondheimsfjord, Norway.

Pentax KX + FA* 24/2.0 + Fuji Provia 400X.

The positive side with using this film for Northern Lights is that it can be pushed quite a lot without messing up the colour balance. The shot above is pushed one stop to ASA800. The negative side is that Fuji stopped producing Provia 400X last year. This film was widely regarded as maybe the finest slide film ever made. It can be pushed to ASA3200 with good results, and it is also very suitable for long exposures, making it ideal for astro work for example. I purchased film from one of the last batches that were available last autumn, and have used the films almost exclusively for Northern Lights during the winter months. I am very happy with the results, the redering from Provia 400X is very different from my K-5. Even though this film is no longer in production, I am glad I got the opportunity to check it out. Luckily I have some more Provia 400X in my freezer awaiting very special Northern Lights outbreaks in the future.

Thank you Paul! I tend to think in the same lines, except in present tense (was>is). I sent mine to Eric Hendrickson in the US for a complete cla two years ago. It is a lovely camera. In fact I prefer it to the MX, due to the larger size. I would love to try a LX some day, I guess it will be quite similar to the KX experience.

You'll love the LX! If you buy one through eBay try to get one from Japan; you'll pay a little more but it will be in great condition. I'm on the lookout for an MX at the moment!
