Great shot! Best viewed large; - where you can see that you've got it, with those amazing multi-facets of the compound eyes.
Was this, ring flash, on-board flash or attached flash?

Hi Colin, it was none of the above! It was shot with a double-head diffused flash firing from both left and right at the same time. This is possible due to a home-made flashgun holder made out of two carpenter's bezels (metal with a slot down the middle) with a hole drilled in the end that has no slot. These fix under the camera with a screw attachment that screws into the tripod mount and then they form two arms; one at the right and one at the left. Onto the ends of the arms I attach two flashguns with remote triggers and line them up them so they fire at the focal point. Onto each flash head is fixed a 90 degree home made diffuser made from a Pringles tube. I might post an image of this at some point if anyone's interested.

Thanks David, that is interesting, my father was a chippy but I don't remember using a bezel, did you mean a bevel? which would sort of fit in with your explanation, if so did you need to anneal the non slot end of the sliding straight-edge, prior to drilling? I always assumed they were harened and tempered. Perhaps I have misunderstood. Yes, I would be interested in seeing an image of your device. Nice to know that I am not alone in doing, or in my case, trying to do, what my wife considers to be ,nutty things in the shed!

Sorry Colin, mis-spelling, I did mean a Bevel. They are hardened steel but I have some pretty good drills that made short work of them!
I will post an image when I get the time to take some shots of it all set up. I'm away for a short weekend break in our caravan this weekend so may possibly get the time to do this.
