A bit of a drill

by SteveEveritt

The wife nagged to do some DIY... but I couldn't help myself, she's due back in 5 minutes and I haven't even started.... Oh dear I'm in trouble.

Which goes to prove there is a photo opportunity in everything, like this shot, well taken

That will 'Land' you in some trouble! This image would be vastly improved by adding a nice piece of coiled steel or aluminium swarf, just peeling off the cutting edge or lying in the flute.

There's some rust on the edge of the flute. Is that from the beer you've been drinking in the shed? Nice. This is a tool I've used most days of my 30 year working career so far, but never thought to take a photo of. Well done, for jolting my awareness of the things around me.

There is a lot more than meets the casual eye to drill geometry and regrinding. It is an art that has to be learnt and practised, to avoid producing lobed holes. Small drills, 1/16 inch, are more difficult to grind correctly than large drills, 1/2 inch, see http://www.mfg.mtu.edu/marc/primers/drilling/nomen.html#definition
and http://www.newmantools.com/machines/drillpoint.html .
Now get back to the grind that you were nagged to do.

It is very effective. I like the way as you caught the drill. Nice one.
