The present building dates from around 1850 and is a Victorian 'Gothic style' 'cloak' over the previous building.
The designer was Sir Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament (hence the similarities).
Originally the site was a monastary (until Henry VIII had his way !) and I suppose this led to the use of 'Abbey' for the name used in the TV series ?
It has been the home for the Carnarvon family for over 300 years and 'Downstairs' nowadays you will find the Egypt exhibition devoted to the work of the famous Lord Carnarvon of Tutankhamun fame.
This view, the closest I could find to that used in the TV promotion, is from the path that leads down to the Monks Garden and the woods.
