The star-burst is not an added effect - it happens when the lens is stopped down to a small aperture. I think this will happen 'automatically' with most lenses as the light hits the coinciding edges of the aperture blades. I think the effect would happen less with rounded blades, which seem to be appearing more and more in modern lenses (to help produce smooth bokeh).
Personally, I really like this by-product and wouldn't normally take it out - it looks good and is 'natural'.
