Like the transition in the water cascade from smooth flowing to choppy rough and how the bird's coloration makes him appear one with water.

+ 1 - also the shape of the water flow caused by the heron's feet mimics his shape.

There is a lot to look at there, particularly all the transitions of the water, as noted above.
Is this the spot where you once captured a salmon jumping by any chance?
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

Its the precise spot David, and was taken at the same time. Like the salmon picture this is a massive crop despite having the 200mm lens on the camera.
