Towanroath Gloaming

Photo Information
Moody transient hazy light around sunset at the iconic Towanroath Engine House in the Wheal Coates tin mining area, nr Chapel Porth, Cornwall.

The jagged cloud fringes and the soft illumination within appealed to me, rugged and moody like the churning waves far below... a grittiness that seemed to echo the toils of mining in the past.

‘Wheal’ is Cornish for ‘place of work’, not 'mine' as is often stated. The term for 'mine' is 'bal'. The mine opened in 1802 and was worked until its closure in 1889. Towanroath Pumping Engine House (1872) was used to pump water from the adjacent 600 ft Towanroath shaft.

Many thanks Paul I had rather optimistically hoped to see sunset or afterglow light in a break in the weather there, but the hazy light that ensued seemed to suit the rugged nature and industrial relics. I tend to be an opportunitistic photographer - rather than have pre-visualized ideas of photographs at particular locations!
