Plaited garlic and onion

Plaited garlic and onion

by GIULIO57

This is a stupid subject but colour contrast and lights attracted my attention…so I was obliged to take my camera, tripod and to shoot. Original is a RAW file processed in Pentax Photo Laboratory then in Photoshop 7. This is the first time I cover such a pathway. To take this pic, I used natural lights coming from a window on the left and an open door at my back right-side. These plaits are often in sight on walls of country-houses. Folk’s belief is to drive evil-eye away. (But it had bad outcome with me!!!).

Not a stupid subject at all- when I first saw it I thought that it was a good choice! Actually it looks just like the inside of one of our outbuildings- we grow and store a lot of our own food. I think that the dual light source has tended to flatten the image a little- almost as if a flash had been used- I would have tried to bring out the form colour and texture of the garlic and onion and leave the brickwork in a little more shadow ( eg. Middle upper left)- even if I had to selectively adjust levels. Realistically I think that a dominant window light source would probably achieve the desired effect- but that is difficult to say without actually being there! Anyway , it works for us- no visits from Dracula for quite some time...........Cheers, Gary

Rich colours and a great first step with this subject matter.

Best regards

The idea is quite interesting, Giulio. Colors and details are pleasant and very well captured too. But, the main problem I have with this pic is the relative darknes of upper third. Maybe you must try some shots with artificial indirect light in order to get more homogenous "clearness".

Regards,

You're right about darkness of the upper third. My problem was and is that" I don't like artificial lights...and I'm not able to use these external sources". I bracketed 5 different shots in RAW then I choose this one. I have not been able to convert it (into JPEG) in a good way.I printed the TIFF version and result is good(darkness area is pleasant)! I don't understand beacuase this JPEG is flat, with no contrast!Giulio 57

You're right. This pic is flat even if RAW and TIFF are good.See my reply to Mr. Senn.I would like to try the system of Morpheus 71...but till now I'm not able to use photomatix. Giulio 57
