Neon Stalactites and Stalagmites

by Wildwood512

A neon photo conversion of Stalactites and Stalagmites reflecting in a pool of water in the Meramec Cave in Missouri, USA;

When discussing mineral formations in caves, we often talk about stalactites and stalagmites.

A stalactite is an icicle-shaped formation that hangs from the ceiling of a cave, and is produced by precipitation of minerals from water dripping through the cave ceiling. Most stalactites have pointed tips.

A stalagmite is an upward-growing mound of mineral deposits that have precipitated from water dripping onto the floor of a cave. Most stalagmites have rounded or flattened tips.

Nice treatment, including the little fellow trying to climb up (bottom right)
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

Interesting effect, although I am sure the original/ un-processed is pretty impressive as well?

Here's how I was taught to remember the difference.....
Stalactites 'hold on tight' to the ceiling
Stalagmites 'might grow up' to meet them. 😉

Andy,
The original photo was quite grainy and not the best quality as I shot it at 6400 ISO since it was so dark in the cave and I did not have a tripod. Thus I gave it a twist to enhance it's appeal. And you are right, in their natural state they are awesome to behold.

Tights and mights - whatever - this is an eye catching representation, colourful and imaginative. I like it.
