It looks like some mineral crystal and its inside is lit with blue light.
My first guess is a salt-crystal lamp, but I think it would be too simple and easy.

Yes, you all correct, it is the build up of lime-scale within the copper outlet pipe/tube at the top of my hot water cylinder. The outlet tube was originally 19 mm inside diameter (I/D) approx. The resultant escape hole measured approximately 8mm x 6mm after some 27 years of domestic use. Thus a cross sectional area reduction of 83%, approximately! I supported the tube on a scrap of extrusion, placed a blue card behind the subject and illuminated the card with a hand held torch in an attempt to give a blue water affect. 35mm macro lens with 31mm of extension tube, I set the exposure to bulb and guessed at 17 seconds, using the old contact printing method of counting 1 'O', 2 'O', etc., in my head. See my later uploaded oblique view image of a short length of the tube.

The combination of the blue and white colors is really nice. I like shape and texture of crystals, nice shot Colin.
