I'm Joining the "I'm Looking up and Taking the Tree Tops" Club

Photo Information
When I take a photograph my first thought is 'How will I take this?'...much akin to everyone out there because that is the skill one wishes to develop. Because I use film, my immediate thought to follow is 'Why do I want to take this?'

Film is expensive in both Financial and Time terms. But that's not always the reason. I look at Ralph Gibson, Robert Doisneau, Bill Brandt, Diane Arbus, David Bailey, and all those amazing photographs and try to believe that capturing essence in that manner is a gift. I have no fairy sitting on my shoulder sprinkling faerie dust over my well wished fors. But I can but try. Trying involves questioning your reasons for clicking the shutter.

This photograph is so titled because I feel this is a waste of a negative...a pointless exercise [excuse the pun]. You and I can see the trees by travelling through the woods/forests and simply looking upwards. I ask myself..'Why am I showing you this as a second hand/rate experience'? So... 'Why?' has become much more important than 'How?'. I don't want to produce pictures that have been Photoshopped to the hilt to improve detail or colour tones, etc.... Maybe time has come to change direction and look for something more in my results. How to progress? Don't know, but I need to think about it.

Nice.
Look, then take the shot to show what you saw and process it with care... This often shows in the image and when it shows and others see it you have a worth while product.

I have to say I see photography in a different way. It's not about the skillful result. It's about how the result makes me feel. Those famous photographers above have images that make my spine tingle and give my stomach a leap. It's that element of 'je ne sais quoi'.

That's what photography is all about. Any art form or what activity we choose to do in our own 'down time' is important. We are all individuals. Whatever makes you comforted and calm is the most important element of all in taking up a pastime.

'All people have their own living road to heaven. Until they walk on this road, they are like drunkards who cannot tell which way is which. Then when they set foot on this road and lose their confusion, it is up to them which way they shall go - they are no longer subject to the arbitrary directions of others'.

Zen Master Mi-An
"The Latent Image that exists before development is a truly mystical and exciting entity and some subsequent individual photographs can make the spine tingle."
