Monarch Butterfly During Migration

by AggieDad

The annual migration of the monarch butterfly is a unique and amazing phenomenon. The monarch is the only butterfly known to make a two-way migration as birds do.

Most butterflies can overwinter as larvae or pupae, but monarchs cannot survive cold winters. Monarchs know when it is time to travel south for the winter and use a combination of air currents and thermals to travel long distances. Some fly as far as 3,000 miles to reach their winter home!

This monarch was part of the migration which moved through eastern Missouri in late September.

Thanks for the nice comments. It's really the monarch who did all the work.
