I do find it worrying that the National Railway museum(s) are offloading their large exhibits at an increasing pace to private institutions.
This is the third locomotive being sold to institutions outside the NRM, the others being the transfer of the North Staffordshire 0-6-2 tank loco to the Foxfield Railway in Staffordshire and the LSWR T3 4-4-0 to the Swanage Railway in Dorset. All three are going with strict conditions as to their long term future and all three are going back to the areas where they spent their working lives as opposed to hundreds of miles away in the North of England. . The move has been very controversial but the new owners are all established railway heritage centres and the sales may be to free up National Railway Museum resources for other purchases. I'm keeping an open mind on the wisdom of the policy.
