Lockdown In Maastricht.

by pauljay

I left my home city of London behind in 1970 when I moved to Belgium to take up a new job. Two years later that job took me just across the border into the Netherlands in the vicinity of Maastricht. Nearly fifty years on and I still love the city to bits! However, the atmosphere is quite different under lockdown conditions; once you get away from areas with food stores and supermarkets everything is closed, as depicted in the photo. Kinda creepy but still delightful!
A five shot HDR, handheld. Processed in Photomatix Pro and ON1.

Brings back memories from when I lived there in 1987 , Close to Leiden. What i loved about it was cycling from country town to town on days off . They really made everything easy for pedestrians very little car traffic in small towns. Loved it

It is a sad sight to see all those empty shopping streets Paul, but it does give the photographer the opportunity to show the street without people walking past the camera.
nice picture, but HDR is not a bit outdated, nowadays the dynamic range of your camera is still high enough to do it in 1 photo, the highlights pull back a little and the shadow slightly open should be able to deliver the same result in my opinion

Many thanks for your comments Thijs. I get great pleasure out of editing my HDR shots because of the range of character and texture that can be injected into the photo. I generally only use HDR for buildings, both inside and out, and other occasional hardware; it is, in my opinion, totally useless for landscapes, for example. Looking back at the individual shots that made up the Maastricht HDRs my knowledge would not have let me produce the result that I wanted from just one of them. So long as you use it delicately you can get the degree of realism that you want; painterly results are perhaps old fashioned but then there could even be a time and a place for that! Anyway, I shall continue to use it on those occasions that I feel it is appropriate.
Have you had any problems with your Z1's pop up flash? Mine decided to pop up recently and no amount of persuasion would make it pop back down again!

HA Paul,

I rarely used the pop-up flash because when I needed flash units I used the Af 500 ftz
The pop-up flash is still working for me, but I am afraid that if I am going to use that the feather will stop due to the long lying still

Kind regards Thijs
