The Fly and Pearl

by Gary Hickin

A very small fly on a leaf-I don't know what the 'pearl' is but I'm glad it was there.

It is a perfect picture. The lights and colours are beautiful, I really like it. Congratulations.

Could the 'pearl' be an egg? Nice shot.

Hi Gary,

Congratulations on capturing such an arresting image.

I've been studying it closely trying to work out how you managed to achieve the extraordinary DOF at such high magnification ratio. Would you consider sharing your secret(s)?

Yours in awe,

Jon

Hi Jon, I'm hooked on my macro rig that I have recently cobbled together. K20D with grip, Metz 54i, both mounted on a homemade adjustable flash bracket. I use either a 100mm f4 M macro or 70-210mm A (with tubes and/or a Raynox DCR250). The flash allows me to use F32 most of the time for tiny subjects- the 14.6 sensor allows quite heavy cropping down to 6-8 mp . I sometimes use focus stacking but usually only with tripod shots. All of my current macros are handheld so focus stacking software is not entirely suitable due to inevitable variations shot to shot. Cheers, Gary
