Crowns engine houses, Botallack, Cornwall

Photo of the Week by mcrtchly

The last of the Sun's rays illuminate the engine houses at Crowns, Botallack, Cornwall. The house on the left was built in 1830 and was home to a the steam engine which pumped water out of the mine. The upper engine house was known as "Pearce's Engine House" and was built in the 1850s. This housed the winding engine that pulled tram cars up and down the diagonal Boscawen shaft. This shaft was 2,500 feet long, reaching out under the sea bed at an angle of around 30 degrees. The Boscawen shaft was the location for an accident in 1863 when a chain broke when hauling men up. Nine miners lost their lives when the skip fell from the 135 level to the bottom of the shaft.

Honoured that this photo was selected for the Flickr Explore page, one of 500 photos selected each day from the tens of millions of photos uploaded daily.

Your decision to make this a dark image was wise I think.

Wonderful rendition of a classic scene. Well deserving of the honour.

Great shot, very atmospheric and deserving of the Explore status.

I've had five or six shots selected for Explore in the past 2 or 3 years, which is always gratifying, especially as I rarely upload to Flickr.

Well deserved POTW. As others have said, atmospheric, great light.

To use a highly technical photographic term, 'aboslutely fabby'.

Congratulations.

Love the way in which you've presented this version of a very frequently shot location - deserved POTW.

Thanks all the kind comments and of course I’m honoured by the award of POTW - much appreciated. It’s great to be in Cornwall again at last, allow we had to cancel photo tours with clients here this year due to the pandemic.
