Dee Bridge

Photo Information
This week's Weekly Competition is up and running. Subject: 'Made by Man.' I'm looking for architectural or engineering structures, ancient or modern, such as cathedrals, castles bridges, fantastic contemporary urban developments, historic ruins etc. My picture of the bridge over the River Dee close to the England/Wales border near Chester is just one example. Usual rules apply - Pentax cameras only but your own choice of lens. Freshly taken for the competition or from your archives. Entries deadline Sunday Midnight December 11.

I know this bridge well.... you've captured it brilliantly!
At the beggining there was nothing....

Which exploded....

Back in the day, at university, I designed a bridge to span a gap to carry a load and that had to be lightweight and robust (can't recall the details). Most students used beams, girders and various classic trusses. I reasoned that a triangle is a mega robust form so I made a model with a central pole from which radiated cables to support the deck. It was rejected as being fanciful even though we had to find extra weight hangers to hang more weights from the deck. Every other design collapsed, buckled or broke within 3 times the specified loading. Mine withstood 27 times the required load before it (literally) exploded with bits flying everywhere! Received wisdom of the day required a basic lattice truss - which design formed the remainder of the lesson. I always swear loudly today every time I see one of these damn structures because I came up with the idea first.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

The two Davids' stories rival the image itself: most interesting commentary, especially davidwozhere's.

Just saw this post Davidwoz, you're instinctive engineering idea was plagiarised by someone who realised its potential
All the celebrated icons of art have done exactly the same for fame by taken advantage of something new and innovative by some young buck and ran with it. Picasso springs to mind but there are too many to mention
Great Photo of engineering Davidtrout as i digressed somewhat
