dont now much about steam trains would this be in the same class as the scotsman?

They did the same sort of work, hauling front line express passenger trains, but the Duchess is more powerful than Flying Scotsman. The Duchess Class was rated power class 8 by British Rail as opposed to Class 7 for the A3s like Flying Scotsman.

As David said ... although I would turn your question around to answer it:
No. Scotsman is nowhere near in the same class as a Big Lizzie.
