What a great steam in the landscape photo Andrew. Blanche is a long way from home though.

First time the loco had EVER been outside of Wales, David. It was a great day, particularly as I was allowed a footplate ride by the driver... my son!
Best wishes,

Andrew

You lucky beggar. This is a fine shot indeed

Nice one Andrew. I always remember my first ever footplate ride. As a small boy we lived next door to an engine driver based at Consett sheds. I got a ride on a old North Eastern Railway 0-6-2 tank engine with him. It was exciting and the first of many subsequent illicit footplate rides, mainly on Consett and Tyne Dock based freight engines. But the best came later - an official ride on a 9F all the way from Tyne Dock to Consett with an 800+ton iron ore train. By then I was working as a junior reporter on the local weekly newspaper and wangled a footplate pass from North Eastern Region HQ at York to write a feature on the men who kept Consett's steelworks in action.

Those were truly the days, David. REAL mainline steam used for a purpose other than entertainment.
Best wishes,

Andrew

There are times Andrew when your excellence gets right up my nose! Pure jealousy you understand!
