From The Sea and to The Sea

Photo Information
This image has a special poignancy for me. It is photographed from Old St. Stephen's Churchyard which is close to Robin Hood's Bay and Fylingthorpe on the Yorkshire Coast, South of Whitby. The graveyard is full of Master Mariners and Seamen, a large number of which are from my own family, the Storm family, which has its roots in this area. Many a tale has been told about the Storms and they also feature heavily in a series of Victorian photographic images by Sutcliffe, many of which can be bought as Postcards in the Whitby area. Visit the Museum in the village (Robin Hood's Bay) and there is a mass of information about the area and the Storm family in particular.

To add to the atmosphere of the place, the old Gravestones seem to be lining up and pointing back out to sea - back to the place that was the second home of the men buried here.

Well chosen point of view and good shot. I like the way the gravestones are lined up and also the story behind.

You inspired me to dig out my only book (A Fourth Selection) of Frank Sutcliffe photos and, indeed, there is one photo featuring Lumar William Storm! Sutcliffe's pictorial depiction of the Whitby area is just amazing and we could all learn from his compositions. His group shots may well have been posed but he made them look so natural. I won't even mention the incredible sharpness! Oh, I just did!
Lovely shot David.
