A Kiss of Light-BW

by GIULIO57

This is a BW version of a previous upload “A Kiss of Light”. For lovers of technical infos here are some details. Original HDR coloured file has been converted into BW using TOPAZ BW software. I have choosen “warm tone” and “Kodak T-MAX 100”settings…I have prepared other BW versions using both Silver EFEX Pro 2-Kodak Technical Pan setting and Quadtone….but I prefer TOPAZ version because its appeal is almost similar to an old paper I was used to manage in the past in my darkroom…ILFORD Multigrade Baritate WarmTone paper. IMHO result is closer to my personal opinion of “soul-scapes”….Meanwhile I wish YOU ALL a GREAT EASTER. PS Honestly speaking I prefer traditional BW films and papers. Digital BW looks at me a little bit fake…but this is the evidence “I’m perhaps old”!

Excellent conversion. I was interested in your PP details. I often take the Topaz road to fine tuning monos. This shot has lots of power and the detail - notably the tree - are beautiful.

I love the way you have shown the light/shade on the landscape.
Best Regards, Larry.

A magnificent landscape Giulio. Full of grandeur and drama. The subtle toning suits the image so well.
Best wishes,

Andrew

A great conversion Giulio.
Thanks for the technical details. I too use Topaz B&W and also think their DeNoise is one of the best of it's type

Smashing conversion, i wouldn't choose between the two, they are both keepers in their own right

Here follows flow-chart of this reworked file. Photoshop CS5-File Open-I opened the original HDR coloured file. Then Filter-Topaz labs and then TOPAZ BW Effects 2.
Click on the flag of Traditional Collection and choose WARM TONE III (or the effect you like).
On the right of the screen and photo live 4 sections. Over lives the section of filters: I choosed ORANGE.
Section 1-Conversion
-Basic exposure(I worked on Contrast, Brightness, Boost BWs….I suggest you to stay as close as possible at values that software shows you…anycase drag sliders at your own liking to get the effect you are looking for).
-Adaptative regions…I worked choosing 5 regions(I’m not talking about local adjustments).
Section 2 and 3) NO creative effects and no local adjustments
Section 4-Finishing touches. I worked on “silver and paper tone” and “edge exposure” to fix darkest bottom right/left corners.

Hope it is useful for you....I sent you a private msg.

Unfortunately the details are wasted on me as my darkroom experiences were quite limited and were way back in the 70s! Nevertheless, I love both versions of this magnificent landscape,
