I can remember, Andrew, working until 1 or 2 in the morning, when we lived in Greater London in the eighties, trying to enlarge black & white negaives to achieve this look!

The "spread" of the blacks into the whites is lovely & it renders a sombre effect, reminiscent of Don McCullen's work in his book "Open Skies", in which he managed(?) to make even the Somerset Levels look like a war-zone!

Many thanks for letting us see.
(And for invoking the memories.)

Roger.

I think this is an example of how to get the very best from a scene. Inspiring.

Wow! Thanks folks. I'm touched by your comments. And I nearly didn't post this one, thinking it looked too dark. The light was very trying.

Interestingly, Roger, it's from your neck of the woods (just over our border!) and has received a healthy (unhealthy?) dose of post production using two RAW files and layers...not far off Roger's eighties darkroom efforts, which I also remember.
Best wishes,

Andrew

...just put some v.fine mesh material (stocking!) over the enlarger lens & expose the print.

The blacks "spill" into the whites.

How to do this in Photoshop...?

Answers on a postcard, please, to.......

Roger.

I really like the low key nature of it. I find my attention drawn to the tree in the middle which is nice.
