Black and white certainly suits steam train photos - perhaps its a nostalgia thing. I think I could live without the grain in this shot but its highly enjoyable, so 1950s.

Yes, you're right David. It actually looks worse in the gallery but I won't do it again. The original colour version's a bit gloomy (poor light 400 ASA) but a simpler conversion would have sufficed.

Nice shot Andrew, with a good range of tones and a sense of movement.
The exposure looks optimum as there seems to be quite a contrast between the front of the smokebox and the side of the side-tank, so I would not want to go either way.
Always nice to see a good exhaust picked out against the sky.
