The Great White Egret is still about despite frozen pits and ponds and now fishing from unfrozen river. This photo taken from about 1/4-1/3 mile away. Lens Sigma 150-500, RAW image heavily cropped.

OK I maybe over egged distance a little bit, but it was the best part of a 1/4mile away and this bird is much much bigger than a grey heron, probably twice as tall.
As for seeing it, these birds are so pure bright white they stand out from the scenery like Persil washed sheets on a slag heap. I am pleased how well it came out, some I took from much nearer looked good in camera but on the PC were useless. This one is cropped to 78% viewed full screen on my PC. (Thank goodness for RAW)
