Dungeness Beach

Photo Information
One of the narrow gauge railway lines that run from the road at Dungeness to the beach. There were several of these railways built to carry wagons up the ever increasing shingle beach. The hut, and the boat in the distance, have been abandoned as long shore drift has taken the sea further and further away; today you can see lines of abandoned boats, huts and winding engines that have been left behind as the sea retreats.
Dungeness is one of the largest areas of ‘inland’ shingle in the world. It is nowadays designated as an area of ‘Specific Scientific Special Interest.
The wheels on the line – obviously over gauge – have been there for years.
