I was walking in some farmland behind the golfcourse where I sometimes live on the West Coast of the Cape Province in South Africa, when this bird suddenly rushed at me. On closer inspection I found that there was a pair and that they were hatching nearby. The female(?) sat on the eggs while this one attempted to chase me away. I took a few shots and moved away so as not to disturb them unnecessarily. Surprisingly they were breeding not far away from some houses where the inhabitants told me that their dogs do not even get close to these birds as they are fearless and chase away even larger dogs in the vicinity.
I looked in again a few days later and all seemed to be well with them. I wish them luck.
This is a Spotted Thick-knee (previously known as a Spotted Dikkop).
