You don't see this every day !
It turned out to be a new bridge, for the drainage channel just above Mapledurham Lock.
What you can't see in this view is that the mariner is actually controlling a small tug behind the bridge which is pushing the pontoon carrying the bridge. Just after this he had to steer it carefully through the lock with just around a foot clearance either side.
They were able to transport the bridge this way as it is a new type of plastic construction, already used elsewhere in the World but this is the first in the UK.

When I first saw it I did think it looked like some student prank or a floating bed for a novelty raft race !
Fortunately someone from the engineering firm installing the bridge was close by to give me the true story.
