Rare Full Cold Moon - Dec. 25, 2015

Photo Information
Christmas Day saw its first full moon since 1977 this year. This full moon, the last one for 2015, is called a Full Cold Moon because it happens during the start of winter. A full moon on Christmas won't happen again until 2034, NASA said.

What a perfect opportunity to try out my new Christmas present...a new Pentax 55 - 300 WR lens. Have only had it for a day but am thus far impressed with the capabilities of this level of lens that I got for a fantastic price of $255 US from
B & H photo.

I realize that a longer telephoto and perhaps a better optics lens (and if I had used a tripod) would have rendered a much better image, but for what this lens is, I'm pretty excited about it's possibilities, especially considering the price.

Oh I love me a good moon shot! Beautiful. You will enjoy this lens. It's unbelievable for the money

Also, tripods are overrated when it comes to moon photography Not sure why every single guide out there tells you you can't get good results without one, when you can! But than, most suggest manual focus is the only way as well when auto focus on the 55-300 is perfect on the moon most of the time as well.

It's a nice image. It was grey grey and rain here
but I don't understand Mags' comment about the use of auto focus - surely something of the order of 250 000 miles = "infinity" on any lens? I just set that and play with the aperture and timer! Higher ISOs you can hand hold and with slower ISO you sit it on a tripod.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

'At infinity' works as well, given you bothered finding out and marking where that is on the lens. With the 55-300 auto focus on the moon works nearly every time and saves you the trouble. I had two copies of that lens and infinity was not on the mark on either, hence the comment :p Never owned anything fancier at 300mm+ focal length. None of my lenses focus accurately on the mark in fact
