The High Altar

by jeg1961

This is the high altar in Wells Cathedral. I have converted the shot in Photoshop 7 Elements, as the lighting inside the cathedral was either very dark or very light. This shot had very bright windows, but the altar was in dark shadows. After spending a couple hours processing this shot, I could not get the balance right, so I decided to colour pop the altar.

I hope I have done the shot justice.

I think you've doe a good job Jeremy. Just a thought though, have you considered using HDR to process shots like this? The sensor on the K-5 is so good that you can use a single, correctly exposed shot (in RAW), then adjust the exposure in the Pentax software that comes with your camera from around -2 stops to +2 stops (i.e. produce 5 different exposure adjusted files). Then process these adjusted files in something like Photomatix and you will be amazed at the results. You have to be careful to avoid introducing noise and also be subtle with the effect as it can go 'over the top', but for subjects like the inside of a Cathedral it is unbeatable.

Best wishes

I think you've achieved a remarkably well exposed image and the c0lour pop is certainly very effective

Again, this was a perfect opportunity to use HDR as you had such a dynamic range!
