Uphill from Unstone

by pgweber

From the same shoot as yesterday's, this was more like what I wanted as a shot.

This is a crop from a shot with the 18-55, which would have been better with a telephoto if I had known a diesel was about to intervene.

The steam and sky do merge a little but the effort by the engines can be seen. Unstone is the village at the bottom of the hill, on the line between Chesterfield and Sheffield.

I think this is a wonderful atmospheric shot with lots of exhaust from the engines and the train curving over the top of the incline.

Thank you for the appreciative comments David.

As I have said before, the choice of location is so important.

When I photograph a steam engine, I want to show it at it's best, working hard. Some of my gallery shots make this point, at places like Greenholme at the foot of Shap, Ais Gill on the Settle-Carlisle and the Southbound climb out of Sheffield.

Incidentally, that was not the top of the climb as there was about another mile to go. It is just a temporary easing of the gradient through Dronfield station, so the fireman can keep shovelling!

Regards
Peter
