'Old Bill' caught in the the frame.

Photo Information
Bruce Bairnsfather's cartoon creation that came to epitomise the plight of the ordinary 'Tommy' during WWI. Here he has been 'immortalised' in the form of a brass radiator cap on the eponymous B43-type London bus that now resides in the entrance hall of the Imperial War Museum, London. This was one of 300 buses requisitioned and modified by the British Army in October 1914 for use as troop transports in Belgium and France. After the war it resumed its peacetime duties until 1920, when it was refurbished as a permanent memorial to the role played by London buses during the Great War.
