I've found it useful to 'develop' different versions of the same photo, which will all be the same size. When opened as layers in photoshop, you can then cut out the bits you want to be more extreme or less etc.

In the example above, I made a black and white HDR version and a crazy colour one, which I loaded as a layer under the BW version. I then cut away to from the black and white version to reveal colour below as required. That was just my thoughts on the day but I liked the vibe.

HDR does crazy things to green plants, which often end up sickly yellow in colour, so in this particular shot the BW treatment on the vegetation to the left worked well.
