i used the 50-200mm kit lens that came with my pentax km

Maybe a tad underexposed though, I would tend to go positive on the exposure compensation and either spot or centre weight when shooting aircraft.
Opening up the aperture might of helped you drop the ISO a little too
Out of interest which lens did you use?
