Long tailed Tit...

Photo Information
...Leaving the thorny bush for more nesting material.

Not the sharpest ever, but the best of the(quite large!) bunch taken yesterday in our garden, from the car.
These little fellas go like rockets!

Brilliant shot with the wings showing just the right amount of movement and nice colours. As you say they don't stay still for more than a second and when they do move they seem to be jet propelled. Were you set up and focused for where you thought it would come out? Whatever you did its a cracking shot.

It's a lovely shot - I'd love to see one. You've captured it's softness as well.

Thanks for looking everyone, & for your kind comments.

Yes, David.
Set-up in the car, driver's seat looking through the passenger's open window.
Handheld.
TAV mode to achieve high shutter speed & a reasonable amount of D-O-F.
Next time I think I'd set a higher sh/speed to eliminate a little of the bird's movement.
Focussing is the difficult bit!
CIF is just too slow. Auto invariably chooses one of the twigs. Pre-set manual is a one-chance-only sort of deal.
I used spot focus. Watched as the bird started to move away from the nest within the bush &, as it got near the edge to launch & start flying, I started shooting on rapid continuous, following the bird until it had flown(!), as far as poss. keeping the bird central in the focus-point.

By no means 100% success rate, but the best I found.

Thanks again for the interest shown,

Roger.
