pesky magpie

I had wondered why the contents of this particular feeder went down so quickly. The answer is this pesky visitor. It can't quite reach so it bangs the feeder to make it swing and grabs a beakful on its return. Out of about eight of them locally, only this one comes for a suet feast. It used to flutter up and grab the wire like a blue tit but it kept falling off - hence the current strategy. Clever so and so !

The crow family are so intelligent, i just hope the Magpies don't steal our baby birds this year!

Sadly, the baby magpie that we had reared almost since birth flew the roost on January 20! We had cared for her for six and a half months and, like a puppy or kitten, she had become a member of the family. We're discovering now that other residents in the village also miss her. If she did find herself a partner she may well re-appear here at some later stage but in the meantime I shall no longer be walking down the road sharing a croissant with her! Pesky? Only in the most light-hearted way in this family! Nice shot by the way!
