You're lucky it sat down for you. Excellent photo of the thing, grotty surface or not.
The proboscis is not a weapon but is used to suck up sustenance. Its pointy end divides into two halves which it slopps around whilst hovering over a morsel. I can only assume it sticks out so for streamlining?

And I thought only certain birds had a proboscis /drinking straw. Cool to know some bees do too. Thank you David.
