Wouldn't you know it ....

Photo Information
Here was this rather rare Spotted Bee Fly which just had to be sitting on the most grotty background in the garden! Nothing I could do about it.

K5II, DFA100 macro.

Wow. Excellent photo and wow, what a wickedly long stinger on this specimen. The Cyranno of bees! Like.

On second thought, maybe that's his leg because dont stingers face rearward from bees' bottoms?

You're lucky it sat down for you. Excellent photo of the thing, grotty surface or not.

The proboscis is not a weapon but is used to suck up sustenance. Its pointy end divides into two halves which it slopps around whilst hovering over a morsel. I can only assume it sticks out so for streamlining?
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

And I thought only certain birds had a proboscis /drinking straw. Cool to know some bees do too. Thank you David.
