Bamburgh poppies...

by stub

Bought a K1 the day before this trip to Northumberland. So no idea how to activate a number of its better features. Used the Tamron 28-75 as my landscape lens. As im finding the ultra wide lens a bit expensive at present... Have to say both my K1 and K5II brought back some very good results from this venture... It helps a great deal, when the weather stays dry and warm....

As an after thought. Still wondering while at an aperture of f18 more of the image isnt in focus...But happy with it never the less....

Works for me. The closest poppy being in focus is the important thing. Helps to have a castle in the background. (You lucky Brits!)

You have focussed on a point very close to the lens (I don't know exactly how far you were away from the first poppy but it looks close to me). I would have a search for hyperfocal distance for instance, here if you want to know more about the technical side of depth of field.

If you focus at the hyperfocal distance for the lens/aperture/camera combination, you maximise the depth of field. You have focussed in front of the hyperfocal distance and so still have quite a small depth of field despite the small aperture. If you had focussed at the hyper focal distance (somewhere around 5m/15ft looking at the table in the link), you could possibly have got the distant castle in focus as well as the front poppy.

Having said all that, having the shallow depth of field makes this photo and I would be very pleased to have taken it. Nice one.

Thanks for the explanation Andy.. I'll look into that. It was never my intention to have the castle in focus. I was about 3 feet away from the subject as I remember. I used live view and the tilt screen of the K1 to focus . It was only afterwards when I saw the exif here, it made me think for a second.
