Golden Dawn

by GIULIO57

Here is Orvieto’s silhouette as it appears at sunrise to wayfarers going to Lake of Bolsena. A floating isle among fog’s cotton flocks. IMHO, the best hour of the day in this period: for this reason I gave this title to the photo.Nice to look at this “scenario” also in late afternoon, at sunset, when façade of main Cathedral (Duomo at right of this compo) looks like almost a mirror reflecting warm rays of falling sun. A little bit of history is useful. When arch. Lorenzo Maitani was asked for drawing plans of Duomo and to build its facade, he promised to erect the most beautiful Cathedral at that time. When this wonderful Church was ended, glad peoples of Orvieto decided to make him blind. So he was no longer able to re-build such a beautiful Church and Façade in another place of this world. When travelling around Orvieto, its Duomo and Façade appear at every corner reminding of this sad story.I don’t know if it is real (a lot of peoples talk so) or not but this Duomo is a reminder of that period around 1250-1300 (Middle Age).Hand-held camera on monopod PENTAX LX and PENTAX Zoom 40-80mm set at 80mm. Kodak Slide Elite Chrome 100 ISO. F8. Shutter Speed: 1/60s. EPSON Scanner 3200 Perfection. Date: Oct. 23 rd, 2013 at around 7,00 am. I hope You like it.

An absolute stunner. I echo David's sentiments.

That is absolutely gorgeous Giulio! I remember my one and only visit to Orvieto, probably fifteen years ago, taking the funiculari up to the city. Lovely place, and one of my favourite white wines too!

Sorry for delay Paul and THX....This area is well known for white wines....and going to lake of Bolsena you find another SUPER white wine named "Est Est Est" by Montefiascone....Test it and if you shall come to Italy...give me a phone call!!! Funicolare is still in good health
