Ancient Doors

Photo Information
Replica of mid-evil doors built into the character of the Bryn Athyn Cathedral.

Bryn Athyn Cathedral, dedicated in 1919, is a highly acclaimed Gothic and Romanesque style complex located in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania just outside of Philadelphia, USA. The exterior appearance of the Cathedral itself is reminiscent of Gloucester Cathedral in England. (Exterior pics forthcoming).

Great colour (!) and particularly well balanced light and shadow, Donna. I know Gloucester Cathedral very well,: it's only 60 miles away. The nave is very solid Romanesque with huge round columns but the choir is late and wonderful Gothic with slender columns and very wide windows. The cloisters are some of the best in England.
Best wishes,

Andrew

Very nice, interesting composition. I would possibly have included a bit more of the top of the image, to avoid cutting off the marvelous stone work surrounding the door.

Wonderful colour and you've got the composition just right. I like the little splash of green seen through the open door.
It may have been modelled on Gloucester Cathedral but its appearance, judging from this small piece of evidence, couldn't be more different due to the different stonework.

I knew someone might mention to include more at the top. Photographers dilemma....see the yellow cast at the top of the photo...it is being produced by an out of time period industrial light that really fowled up capturing the top of the arch. Tried editing it out but couldn't quite get it to look good, so I cropped it out, thus cutting off the top of the arch with it..dang!

Also, since posting this version, I went ahead and removed some other distractions such as the doorstop, metal framed structure in background as well as toned down the blown out highlights in the leaves in the small window.
Cheers...Donna 😊

I like this one, Donna.
It's got bucketloads of interest !
What with the different doors and archways I find I keep looking in different directions exploring all the corners.

Great shot

Best regards

Full of detail - right down to the little wedge under the door. Is it better with those bits cropped out Donna? I just love the bits tucked into the corners.

Ya know David, perhaps not...they actually didn't bother me enough at first to remove them for this post...will have to weigh it and give it some thought. Thanks! 😉

I have the impression Donna that you've picked up a few ideas from this gallery. No bad thing at all. I hope I shall get to see the real Gloucester Cathedral sometime next year. Most of us Hoopers like to think we're related to Bishop John Hooper who was executed in 1555. Unfortunately, apparently, BJH left no links to the future! Nevertheless I would still like to photograph his statue outside the cathedral. Love this shot Donna!
