Heartwood

by morpheus71

“It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.”

 Robert Louis Stevenson

Autumn mists enshrouding the magical Dendle's Wood (Site of Special Scientific Interest / National Nature Reserve). The heartwood trunk of a fallen beech, with it's epiphytic pin-cushion mosses reminded me around the boughs of the head of triceratops,

I am eternally grateful for the permission of the woodland's custodians to visit this magical place. It's always a visceral experience to be ensconced by this ancient sylvan grandeur.

The woods around Dartmoor are so wet and misty and covered with vegetation they are like something out of Grimms Fairytales, as you so well illustrate here.

Many thanks for your generous and descriptive words David 😊 It was a mesmerizing experience wandering about in those woods for 8 hrs. I could happily spend a week in there exploring 😁

Many thanks Leep😊 Mists drifted through the woods the whole day, it's certainly often wet in there with a few knee deep bogs (I have in the past learned the hard way their locations😂 ... Though this makes the reserve wonderfully biodiverse😎

Nothing left for me to say except this is an awesome Lord of the Rings-y image. Like a whole lot.

Many thanks for your very generous comments 😊 It has a definite Fangorn Forest atmosphere there and Ents would feel well at home there I should think 😁

Just great.

Look at the exposure time and aperture used. An expert at work here.

Thanks very much indeed David 😊 The mists varied in density and the as a result the diffused light levels varied periodically so I kept checking my metering until I made the exposure. Dripping from the trees, and condensation on the polariser were another challenge so I rested my broad brimmed hat over the filter holder too, as I had forgotten to take the umbrella out of the car before the long hike into the woods😲😎

I wouldn't have imagined a triceratops with warts making a particular interesting photo - but it does!
