The boy's face is far more prominent in this version, which overcomes the bright highlight behind. The crop works nicely too. By using the advice proffered by Ian and Andrew, plus your own judgement, you've ended up with a really delightful photograph.

This is a really nice picture. Everything in it draws my attention to the boy's face.

Totally agree with this; and I should add that you produced an unfogettable photograph for many.

It's a lovely evocative shot. I might have been tempted to crop another 10% off the right to lose that darker vertical thing, and possibly even clone out the padlock which is a bit distracting and doesn't seem to add anything.
