Looks like a ceramic furnace - it's actually a fairly common seashell that's been in the wars a bit.
Taken with an extension tube on the end of my Macro Takumar, so it's well beyond 1:1

Nice image. I might have been better to shoot it without the shadow (if possible).

To answer RussV, it could easily have been shot without the shadow by simply tipping it onto its side but then, that dramatic contrast of the flaky bright grey part would have been completely lost. (I'm assuming that is the shadow part referred to?). It was originally taken for the 'Abstracts' monthly competition (May) but not used.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass
