I'm trying to figure out what kind of processing would best suit this image to make it pop. any and all ideas or critique would be appreciated

A stunning image, maybe to make it 'pop' tone down the background somehow to reduce the distracting highlights.

It's just a bit dark. I saved it to my drive and moved the histogram further to the right and then brought the shadows up before giving some (moderate) sharpening. This won't allow me to repost your image unfortunately.
What software are you using? Many of the members here use the top hole Lightroom and similar. It's too complicated for an old duffer like me. I use "Faststone Image Viewer" (mis-namer if ever there was one!) which does all the post processing that I seem to need. It's user friendly and it is FREE !

I think if that wasp got its way the butterfly would certainly "pop" ! It's an excellent capture.

This is a lovely image and i think it could take a little more sharpening, i agree with softening or even lightening the background, then using curves to lighten parts of the Butterfly if it's possible.
