Getting near to these hawks is quite unusual but you appear to have been very lucky. I like the inquiring look of this handsome bird. I might be wrong and often am but could it in fact be a Kestrel? It appears to have too much red/brown colours for a Sparrowhawk also the eyes dont appear to be as bright yellow as I would expect for a Sparrowhawk. See link

Hi David, yes you could be right, it could be a Kestrel. Thank you for spotting the mistake.

On my regular countryside walks in this area I find that kestrels will allow you to get quite close whereas buzzards, for example, won't let you within 100m! One difference between sparrowhawks and kestrels is that kestrels can hover all day long compared to the few seconds that sparrowhawks can manage.
