Wow. A clean 8F ! Nice portrait of a great machine. ..... anybody know what the star denotes?
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

Hi David,
As far as I recall the star denoted that this was one of a select group of 8fs that were tweaked, including wheel balancing, to run at up to 50mph on express freight trains. It does that regularly now with heritage steam charters.

Thank you for that David - the fastest I've ever been on one is about 2mph round 5E shed yard! (aged 15 - and I was driving).

Best engine I drove, about the same age as you were, was a 9F hauling empties on the The Dock-Dock Consett iron ore run. I was sitting in the driver's seat with him standing right behind me supervising. Must have been doing 25-30mph at one point.
In my previous post I was referring to 48151 which has a mainline ticket to run passenger train charters.
