Another nice simple approach. Plenty of space for icons on either side.

A little on the dark side for me but that is just a matter of taste and any icons will brighten up some of the dark areas. I love the whirl-like effect as it gives a hint of some subtle action. Again not a huge amount at the periphery to create a hint peeking around the edges of open windows and panels but there is a little at the top and a little more at the bottom.
