I managed to lose my kit lens so I thought it's about time I upgraded it anyway. I think either of the above would make fine replacements and are (probably) within my price range.

My pick? I'd go with the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens over the Sigma.
My piccies.

That's my feeling too, but I'd take the siggy if it was cheap enough.

I will not trust the Tamron/Sigma concerning the lens...not strong enough, no WR if you are on a Pentax K-5/K30, no full focus manual, etc...

But i will choose the Sigma over the Tamron for sure... Don't take the Tamron seriously

Having owned the tamron for over 4 years and shot around 50,000 images I would disagree with that.

Sure there have been quality issues but these are easily repaired. As for no westhersealing, I have used it with the k-5 and gx20 in all weathers and never had any issues.

I don't understand no full manual focus? What does that mean, I use this lens for manual focus for my club photography.

I would not hesitate in recommending the Tamron.

Tamron is far sharper lens, sigma is little longer but nothing significant.
I tried both and keep tamron, sigma HSm is only quieter than screw driven tamron.

Has anyone ever ordered the tammy or similar from taiwan? They seem to be much cheaper over there - 227.33 new on ebay at the moment.

May sound cheap but you have to add VAT, import duty and courier handling fees. Plus you may have a problem with warranty with the lens being a grey import. do a search in the forum and you should find something about the costs of importing.

You add almost half of this price and you have a like new 16-50mm F2.8 Pentax with fast ship include that i sell in here

It's just my point about the Tamron but for me the Sigma is more solid than the Tamron for sure.

Tamron use cheap stuff and i never feel confortable about the technical support.

Barbarosa, actually the 17-50 Sigma Pentax mount is far sharper than the Tamron one, more solid and more quiet in AF mode

But both of this lens don't have a FTM

Cabstar a FTM prevent you to break the switch auto to manual setting of your lens and it's also detect correct focusing

For exemple you have a beach scene with a person, a no FTM Lens will focus auto the background of the scene instead the person if you just move a little and press the capture..

the FTM will directly focus to the person even if you move, it keep the person until you adjust etc...

Have also more possibilites about using the FTM

Cheers, as much as I'd like the 16-50 pentax it's out of my price range

Regarding grey imports, how often do people actually get picked up for tax?

As I understand it the courier has to pay the fees before the items will clear customs. So the chances are high that you will pay.

only 266 at Amazon. Not worth messing about with grey imports
