Not an expert and it's hard to judge if any part of the image is actually properly sharp since the photo is so small, however, I find that with most wide zooms, the widest end is always the softest so if you tend to enjoy the field of view at 16, you'd be better of getting one where 16 is middle of the pack. I've tried 4 different wide/ultra wide zooms and all had that issue. Try using your lens at 18 instead of 16, or even 17 and you may end up with totally different and much more pleasing results. Just a thought.

Pertinent to your posted example, you can also stitch vertically, so you could have included more of the street plus the top of the building. The following image was two shots - overlapping top and bottom halves - stitched in Microsoft ICE to give a high res square image (about 25 megapixels); ICE automatically straightened the verticals, but the user also has control of that:
