Hi, I have a Pentax K-r and love it, my in my pocket camera has been a Fujifilm A900 but I want to look for a second hand Optio to keep things Pentax.
Any recommendations gratefully recieved.

The I-10 is an amazing price new at the moment. It has been as little as £60, but Amazon is currently £78 or so.

I have the RZ-10. It costs quite a bit more than the I-10 does, but is a brilliant little camera with 10x zoom (28-280).
Not sure you could get one second hand yet though.

I hope this isn't hijacking this thread.
My wife has a little Olympus in her handbag and we are looking to replace it so interested in the comments above.

The main reason for the change is the "response time" between pressing the shutter and the click of the picture being taken. Many pictures have been ruined when things have moved away.

Query - Do all small compacts suffer this "problem"?
Is it noticible in the Optio range?

Small compacts are not as instantaneous as a DSLR is. They are not really action cameras.

The Optios are of medium speed - that is, not the slowest nor the fastest. What they do have is the Pentax colour quality and they produce results on a par with cameras costing much more.

Are there any tables of speeds?

By comparison my K10D is effectively instant as far as I can tell
My wifes Olympus can take noticible seconds (Click the shutter as a second hand sweeps past 12 and it will record between 3-5 seconds)

I thought of digging out my old frequency counter which has time lapse in 1/1000 secs, but then I wouldn't be able to trigger it from the handbag camera -ah well

Hm, no tables, but I reckon a second or so for the I-10 and possible slightly faster for the W90.

It's all relative and the K10D probably shoots in somewhere between 120 - 150ms. A Spotmatic would be much faster to release the shutter, maybe 30ms or so.

The reason most compacts have relatively slow response times is that they don't calculate exposure and/or focus until the moment you actually press the shutter button - those calculations then taking place before the picture is recorded. It varies from camera to camera but in my experience a compact with manual overrides (and used as such) is just as quick as a DSLR.

Of course the downside is that fully manual compacts are (a) thin on the ground and (b) generally as expensive as an entry level DSLR, at which point they become difficult to justify unless you have specific needs.

Picked up a I-10 off ebay for £60, pretty impressed so far.

I think my mum has the same camera! It takes about 5 seconds so she has lots of shots of the ground taken when she thought the shot has been taken and had turned the camera round to view the LCD!

I think any modern P&S would be a lot better - check TrustedReviews or Dpreview to be sure.

EDIT - found this for the i-10 on cameras.co.uk:

Single Shot - 0.38 seconds
Five Shots - 10.35 seconds
Single Shot With Flash - 0.48 seconds
Turn on Time - 2.44 seconds

10 years ago there used to be a program that you could download from Steve's Digicams that measured shutterlag. Basically a timer that counted down 5 4 3 2 1 and you took the photo on 1 and a bar started to be drawn on the screen with x.x seconds elapsed displayed. You could then read the shutter lag off the camera LCD.

I was going to say don't go the Pentax route with a compact as others do it much better but seen as you've bought one I won't bother - enjoy your new camera

Panasonic is quite solid but Pentax now has released some very decent ones the last year though so it isn't bad.

Apologies for the thread hijack, but I've just broken my Nikon pocket compact (dropped from about a foot off the ground a couple of days ago) and am looking out for a new one.

I've been looking at Optios, as the colour rendering from the Nikon was nowhere near as good as that from my Pentax DSLRs, but would be interested to hear what else is worthy of a look, as I'm in the process of reading up on options and looking at sample images.

I'd happily consider anything up to £150 and pocketability, ruggedness and IQ are my primary considerations
