Which is better - the DA* 50-135 used on K-3 or the Tamron 70-200 on the K-1?

Hi guys,

I'm looking at a tiny bit of a dilemma here. I've currently got a screwdrive DA*50-135 that I use with my K-3 and it is probably my favorite APS-C lens ever with almost unbeatable IQ. I've also got a K-1 that will sit around doing naff all unless I get something similar for it (or turn it into a wide-angle beast with a decent WA lens). I used to have the 70-200 before I got the K-1 but sold it as it was a little bit too heavy (and the DA* is just gorgeous...!).

Is it actually worth me buying a Tamron 70-200 for the K-1 (cos I can't afford the D-FA, no way!) when all it will cover is the same equivalent FoV as the DA* lens?

To answer that question, I'd like to know how the two lenses/systems compare. Your experiences would be very helpful

I'll start the process of answering your question ....by asking you a question!

Why did you buy a K1?

Why buy the K1 if you are happy with the K3 and 50-135 combination?

Has the K1 improved your photography?

I have been guilty in the past of overstretching.

Good luck!

You might need it.

I bought the Tamron 70-200 for the K1. Love it. Have agonised over selling the 50-135. Can't bring myself to get rid yet. But it is no longer getting used.
I prefer the K1 to the K3. And use it in crop mode when I need reach. So if I was in your position I'd be using the 50-135 on the K1 while making my mind up.

If I'm going to be honest, I bought the K-1 mainly because it's a shiny new thing. I like the extended DoF you can get from stuff like the 50mm f/1.2 and FA limited lenses, and felt that I'd get more out of them on FF.

The reason the K-3 stays is because of onboard flash, the fisheye zoom and the (18-135 and) 50-135 (which I'll probably never use if I have something as good for the K-1).

It's that itch that you can never scratch, isn't it?

I'd use the K3 for telephoto stuff and the K1 for wide angle pictures. You get full value for your wide angle lenses with a 35mm size sensor. You might need a strong servant to carry the kit around, though!
Best wishes,

This seems to be my target. The K-1 goes to the beautiful places and my Q system goes everywhere else. The K-3 has to deal with the funky high speed shooting every now and then, or telephoto wildlife watching.
